Learn how fast the National Lottery contacts winners. This depends on how and when you play so read our guide for more information.
30 May 2025
The good news is that the National Lottery has efficient systems in place to notify winners quickly - usually within 24 hours of the draw.
How you’re notified depends on how you play
Playing online or via the app
If you play via the National Lottery website or app, you’re notified automatically through an email sent to your registered address or a push notification in the app, typically within 2-24 hours after the draw concludes. You’ll receive an email with “Good news about your ticket” in the subject line.
The notification includes:
- Your ticket number
- The specific draw details
- Your prize amount
- Instructions for claiming
Important: The National Lottery will never ask you for money to release a prize and we do not give details of winning prize amounts in our emails. If you receive such requests, it’s a scam.
Playing at a retail shop
Small Prizes (£2-£500): If you buy a ticket at a retailer, small wins are indicated immediately on the ticket itself, printing “Winner” along with the prize amount. You can claim these prizes instantly at any National Lottery retailer.
For medium to large prizes, the National Lottery contacts you directly. This process involves verifying your ticket against draw results, which can take 1-7 days, followed by a phone call, email, or letter from the Lottery’s winner management team.
Notification timelines by prize amount
Small wins (up to £500)
- Online players: Email within 24 hours
- Retail players: “Winner” printed on ticket; claim at any shop
Medium wins (£501 - £50,000)
- Notification takes 1-7 days, as the Lottery verifies tickets against draw data and contacts winners via phone, email, or mail
- You’ll receive a phone call or email, often from the official number 0845 910 0000 or winners@national-lottery.co.uk, with instructions to verify your identity
Large wins (£50,000+)
- A National Lottery representative calls or visits, using 0845 910 0000 or sending an email from winners@national-lottery.co.uk, followed by a private meeting
- Winners are typically contacted within 1-7 days
- For very large wins, a representative may visit your home to verify the win
How to spot legitimate contact
Genuine National Lottery contact:
- Emails from addresses ending in @national-lottery.co.uk
- Phone calls from 0845 910 0000
- They already know you’ve won - you don’t need to enter competitions
- They never ask for payment to release prizes
- They don’t reveal prize amounts in emails
Red flags for scams:
- Requests for upfront payment
- Claims you’ve won without playing
- Pressure to act immediately
- Poor spelling or grammar
- Non-official email addresses
Key points to remember
- Check regularly: Results are posted online shortly after draws (around 8-9 PM on draw days)
- Keep tickets safe: Winning tickets must be claimed within 180 days
- Update your details: Ensure your contact information is current in your online account
- Syndicate wins: If you’re part of a syndicate (a group pooling tickets), the syndicate organiser or lead player is notified first, usually within 24-48 hours via email or phone
- Use our free lottery tax calculator and see an estimate of how much tax you may owe to HMRC
What to do if you think you’ve won
- Small prizes: Check your ticket at any National Lottery retailer
- Online players: Log into your account to verify
- Large prizes: Call the National Lottery hotline on 0333 234 44 33
- If unsure: Never share personal details until you’ve verified through official channels
The bottom line
The National Lottery’s notification system is quick and reliable. Online players typically know within a day, whilst retail players with larger wins hear within a week. Always verify any win notification through official channels, and remember - legitimate lottery organisations never ask for money to claim your prize.
